Interview with JJ Johnson, Creator of Annedroids http://www.momtobedby8.com/interview-with-jj-johnson-creator-of-annedroids/ http://www.momtobedby8.com/interview-with-jj-johnson-creator-of-annedroids/#respond Thu, 31 Jul 2014 13:56:54 +0000 http://www.momtobedby8.com/?p=39373 {Read More} ]]> JJ JOHNSONIt’s wonderful to see more shows encouraging children to embrace their curiosity and discover science. Especially when the scientist in the spotlight happens to be an awesome little girl. One look at my Pinterest boards, and it’s not a surprise that I’m huge on Steampunk culture and science fiction, so a show that brings some elements of both is more than welcome in our home. Annedroids is one of the new children’s shows that will be streamed exclusively on Amazon, joining other children’s shows we’ve recently talked about here on Mom to Bed by 8. The creator, JJ Johnson, took some time to sit down with me and talk about the new show and what we can expect.

Brooke: I wanted to talk to you about the new show, Annedroids. Could you tell us a little bit about it?

JJ Johnson: Sure! So Annedroids is a series that follows a kid scientist, a little girl named Anne, and she builds androids to help her out with her science experiments. It takes place over twenty six episodes. Anne lives in a junkyard with her dad and basically it’s a character that’s really content to be on her own doing science with friends that she’s literally made out of spare parts. In our first episode two kids from the neighborhood kind of break in and discover her and over the course of the twenty six episodes we kind of watch as Anne gets them excited about science while they kind of get her excited about the outside world.

annedroids banner

Brooke: I actually watched the pilot episode with both of my boys this morning and they are just huge into science and science fiction. We’re a “Star Trek” family, so they want a workshop in the back yard now.

JJ Johnson: Awesome. They enjoyed it then?

Brooke: Yes, very much. Was there any inspiration for the show’s location? Like the neighborhood and the junkyard itself?

JJ Johnson: I’ve always loved a kind of steam punk aesthetic and couldn’t figure out a way to get it into a show. You know junkyards are just so, and as a kid I used to go into junkyards and look around, they’re just this kind of hodgepodge of crazy materials like things from all over. So I’ve always wanted to do a junkyard show.

And then in terms of the neighborhood, I grew up in kind of a lower-middle income environment and you just don’t see that on TV. Everything you see are kind of mansions or kids at school on a cruise ship or something. I really wanted to show an environment that’s true and real to what I think most kids out there are living. And then to present inspirational characters that are characters you can actually aspire to legitimately become. You can become a scientist, an inventor, a creator. We’re not a big fan of putting out shows that just show people becoming superstars.

Brooke: I’ve seen a little bit of conflicting information. I watched this with a four and six year old who both did great with it, but a couple different websites have given different age ranges for it. In your opinion, what age range would you say this is appropriate for or targeted at?

JJ Johnson: Truthfully, we make all of our stuff for families. I think if you’re really dealing with socio-emotionally learning and you’re talking about sharing or you’re dealing with hardcore curriculum math then you can start to say ‘well this is geared toward four or five year olds’. We’re just trying to get kids to be excited about science so in these episodes I think you’ll notice that we’re not trying to take you through the A’s, B’s, and C’s of how android technology works or how lightning works. We’re just wanting to give cool factoids to get kids excited about that subject and hopefully they’ll go offline and learn some more or go to their parents and say, ‘Oh, I’m really curious about this animal now or space’ because they’ve been excited about something they saw on the show. I’m hopeful that it’s something that whole families would enjoy watching together.

Brooke: Especially for the parents when they get to the credits and hear ‘Weird Science’. I think I laughed for about five minutes.

JJ Johnson: Laughs. That was my favorite. The fact that we got that song still makes me smile right now. I mean I love that movie. It kind of blew my mind as a kid. A number of movies did, but I’ve just always loved that song so the fact that we were able to get it for the show is thrilling to me.

Brooke: That was amazing. Now, this show is an Amazon exclusive. We’ve seen a couple of these shows popping up. I think that’s an amazing delivery system. So what has it been like for you, having done things like Dino Dan for TV, to jump into this streamable format for Amazon?

JJ Johnson: Well, I love it. This is a very tech progressive series, so it just makes sense that it’s on a new network that’s launching. For me, there’s been so many opportunities like the fact that we can do an arc story line, a season-long story line where we watch these kids’ and these androids’ characters develop over the course of the episodes rather than be stuck sort of in a locked format.

I love that Amazon’s eager to do apps so we’ll be introducing a slate of apps that correspond to each episode. What we try to do with all of our shows is if a kid gets excited about a certain subject in the show, we want them to be able to explore that in a virtual safe way. So for any experiment that you see on the show, you’ll be able to play an app a couple weeks from now when we put them all up that lets you do that. So if you see them mixing chemicals, now you can mix some chemicals and see what happens. If they’re going into space, now you can mess around and build your own rocket and launch it into space. I’m just really trying to never stop the adventure and never inhibit a kid’s curiosity.

Brooke: I love how bright of a little girl Anne is. With this being a big arc, could you give us any sort of idea of what inventions we can expect from her in the first season?

JJ Johnson: So SO many things. To your point about her character, she’s just one of my favorite role models that we’ve ever worked on. My favorite thing about her is that she actively likes to fail because it gets her one step closer to finding the right solutions. She messes around with a lot of things. In the first episode, what you’ll see is that she helps her friends. They build a lawn mowing robot together because one of the friends across the street has to finish a chore before he can come over.

And then really they get into some very sophisticated things. Over the first couple of episodes you’ll see that there’s a rocket launch that goes bad and accidentally hits a pigeon and its wing gets injured, so they decide to build a harrier jet pack for it. That’s one of my favorite episodes. You’ll see this awesome space episode where she wants to show her friends a lunar eclipse so they stay up late and they’ve got this observatory that they’ve built on top of this decrepit carousel. There’s just many kind of weird twists, but we do try to show a sort of grab bag of science. There are androids and robotics as a core theme. We also do look at space. We look at animal science. We look at any little piece that we think is going to grab this audience’s attention.

Brooke: Well think it’s a really wonderful show and I’m looking forward to watching the rest with my kids. I know that they’re streamable right now, right?

JJ Johnson: The first seven episodes are up, so that takes you from meeting Anne and introducing all three androids to her friends, and opening up the junkyard environment, and culminates with meeting Anne’s Dad in episode seven. I think the next six episodes should be coming up in the Fall. It just takes us a long time to incorporate the CG animation into live action. it takes us about six months so we’re desperately trying to race it through, but it’s just going to be a little staggered.

Brooke: Well, I’m looking forward to it! We’ll keep the readers updated as soon as the next ones go up.

JJ Johnson: Well thank you!

Brooke: Thanks for sitting down with me today!

Annedroids is something I’m going to enjoy watching with the kids.
If you want to check it out, you can watch the pilot episode for free Here.

How a Single Mother May Pamper Herself with a Vacation http://www.momtobedby8.com/how-a-single-mother-may-pamper-herself-with-a-vacation/ http://www.momtobedby8.com/how-a-single-mother-may-pamper-herself-with-a-vacation/#comments Wed, 30 Jul 2014 01:46:14 +0000 http://www.momtobedby8.com/?p=39370 {Read More} ]]> As a single mother, it can be quite difficult to get away at times in order to recharge your batteries. It’s not selfish of yourself to want to have some “you” time. In fact, most family therapists insist that you find time to care for yourself in order to improve the way you handle the day-to-day stresses of family life. While the vacation may seem like an incredible idea, how can you afford to get away for a weekend? By carefully budgeting your credit card to help you, you can take a relaxing, stress-reducing trip.

How a Single Mother May Pamper Herself with a Vacation

How Bonus Miles Can Help You Get Away for a Few Days

With the right credit card in your pocket, you can build up enough miles in order to take a small vacation to catch your breath. By saving up your sign up bonus and then making purchases periodically, you can quickly accumulate what’s needed in order to pay for a flight to a wide range of destinations.

There are so many credit card options out there, sometimes it takes some time to find the right one. MileCards.com can help you sort through SkyMiles credit card offers to find the best solution for your needs. Over the period of a relatively short amount of time, bonuses can add up very quickly allowing you to pay for flights and hotel rooms to virtually anywhere Delta flights will take you.

As a single mom, there are many times when you can purchase various items using your Delta SkyMiles credit card that can ultimately place you in a vacation hotspot. Every time you swipe that card is another collection of reward miles added to your account. Whether you’re buying food, diapers, and school clothes or paying for school activities, each purchase puts you closer to a weekend getaway. While you could make some of those purchases in cash, why not use the credit card and reward yourself later on?

Maximizing the Vacationing Experience

Although you may use your rewards card to make various purchases, not carrying a balance when it comes time to take flight can help maximize your experiences abroad. Depending on your available balance, you can pay for an incredible experience over time instead of relying on a savings account. Let your miles pay for the flight and possibly hotel stay, but use the rewards card to make purchases while on vacation. This not only allows you to afford an experience you may not have otherwise, it can also build miles for your next vacation with each expense.

Problems with Maintaining a Savings Account

Savings accounts can be a wondrous thing when used properly. The money you deposit into these accounts can accrue interest for no other reason than because it’s sitting in the bank. The problem with trying to save up for a vacation is the fact that many mothers have to use that account in order to pay for emergency expenses. While it may sound good in theory, many situations arise that force you to pull money out. If you are able to maintain a savings account, then you can use it in unison with your rewards card while on vacation and vastly increase the experience.

The Reality of a Lavish Vacation When You Make Less than $40,000 Per Year

Luxurious vacations don’t have to be isolated to those that make a decent living. As long as you can maintain a good credit rating, you can have those amazing vacations without having the highest paying job. As your credit builds over time, your available balance will increase to the point of providing the means to pay for a nice weekend away without the kids. Good credit does more for you than allow you to buy a house or a car. It can help you stay ahead of your finances and have a safety net for those unexpected expenses.

One of the best practices you can have as a single mother is to realize your spending needs. With a strong budget plan in effect, you can make sure that you have enough to care for the children and yourself as well as a plan for repaying the credit card after the vacation you surely need. Single parenting is difficult, and being able to come home and be more of an effective parent after relaxing for a few days and gathering your composure is a good plan.

As long as you budget your money well, it’s possible to have many of the finer things in life. Too many people will live beyond their means and put themselves into financial jeopardy. Usually, this is caused by impatience towards wanting certain things. It’s all about understanding priorities and how credit can work to improve your lifestyle. Find the perfect SkyMiles credit card offers for your budget and begin building towards that perfect getaway. It may help you become a better parent for your children.

Cost of Car Ownership http://www.momtobedby8.com/cost-of-car-ownership/ http://www.momtobedby8.com/cost-of-car-ownership/#comments Mon, 28 Jul 2014 23:19:34 +0000 http://www.momtobedby8.com/?p=39366 {Read More} ]]> Many people mistakenly believe that the only investment required for owning a vehicle is the initial purchase. And while it’s true that you’ll undoubtedly fork over a decent chunk of change as a down payment, and will be responsible for several hundred dollars per month in loan and insurance costs, there are other costs associated with owning a vehicle. These costs are referred to as the cost of ownership, and depending on the type of vehicle you own, and what your driving habits are, your cost of vehicle ownership may be more or less than, say, your neighbor’s or your sister’s.

Take the Toyota RAV4, for example. The rav4 cost of ownership may be a bit higher than the cost of owning a compact vehicle, simply because the rav4 is an SUV and thus costs more to run and maintain. It’s estimated that repair costs will be little to nothing during the first two to three years, but after that you’re looking at higher costs, simply because you’ll most likely need to replace worn out parts, such as tires, wiper blades, and the vehicle battery.

When considering your next vehicle purchase, be sure to ask your dealer about the cost of ownership, as these estimates should be taken into consideration before you sign the dotted line.

The Best Sunscreen For Your Baby http://www.momtobedby8.com/the-best-sunscreen-for-your-baby/ http://www.momtobedby8.com/the-best-sunscreen-for-your-baby/#comments Mon, 28 Jul 2014 16:59:38 +0000 http://www.momtobedby8.com/?p=39359 {Read More} ]]> Summer’s around the corner, and fun in the sun for you and your baby may involve walks out in nature, lazy beach days, and time to just relax in the yard and enjoy the breeze, and taking a nap in the dappled light beneath a tree. As you enjoy picnics and other outdoor activities, make sure that you take along a tube of sunscreen for your baby (as well as yourself!). Sun protection starts early so it’s important to find the best sunscreenfor your child. The About Pediatrics site notes that two mistakes parents sometimes make are choosing the highest SPF, and only looking at brands that have the word “kids” on their label.

The Best Sunscreen For Your Baby

For Babies Less Than Six Months Old

According to the FDA, the best approach for being in the sun with your baby is to avoid any exposure to the sun for infants under six months old. Sunscreen is recommended for adults and children, but there’s a slightly different set of advice for young babies. The best sunscreenfor your baby is to keep her in the shade. If there aren’t any trees or areas with natural shade, then bring along an umbrella or keep your baby beneath the canopy of his stroller. Avoid the high-noon peak hours between 10 AM and 2 PM which is probably a good idea for everyone!

Fun In the Sun For Baby

If your baby is more than six months old, apply sunscreen liberally, says the Mayo Clinic, but keep him out of direct sunlight if at all possible. By dressing your baby in protective swimwear, a cute hat with a brim, and sun glasses, he should be equipped to enjoy his day at the beach.

There are two factors to consider when you’re enjoying a sunny day with your baby: their skin is much less mature than an adult’s and infants have a higher surface-area to body-weight ratio as compared to adults or older children. Take both of these into account when considering how much sunscreen you would slather on—their exposure will be much greater, potentially increasing the side effects from sunscreen. If there’s no way to keep a baby out of the sun—perhaps you go boating regularly and cover up your baby but want to be prepared for those moments when her skin might get kissed by the sun—talk to your pediatrician, who may advise that you apply small dabs of sunscreen to your baby’s cheeks, or other areas that might need it. Before you proceed it’s a good idea to test out the product on your baby’s wrist to ensure it doesn’t irritate her. As you’re out and about with your baby make sure you’re aware that she doesn’t sweat like you do, so keep her cool and aerated, and give her water to stay hydrated.

Make sure your baby wears a hat that protects his face and provides sufficient shade at all times. Avoid any combination sun screens that include DEET or another pesticide. Young infants often put their hands in their mouth, and the AAP recommends not using DEET on babies younger than two months old. And, if you notice that your baby is getting sun burned, take her out of the sun immediately and apply cold compresses.

When you’re choosing a baby sunscreen it’s best to not always choose what’s on sale, but look for a high quality product that meets these requirements:

  • The best sunscreen has a broad-spectrum of protection with an SPF of at least 15 like the one here manufactured by The Honest Company. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends that you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every couple of hours or more often if your baby is spending time in the water or perspiring.
  • Broad spectrum basically means that the sunscreen will protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays may not be your baby’s immediate concern as these cause wrinkling, aging and skin cancer, but it should be on your list, for the future health of your child. UVB rays are the ones that cause the uncomfortable sunburn, turning you pink or red from too much sun.
  • Look for a sunscreen that contains only inorganic filters, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and definitely avoid the combination sunscreen/insect repellent varieties that may contain DEET. Sunscreen typically has to be reapplied whereas insect repellent does not and there’s no need to put an additional chemical on your child’s skin.
  • SafeMama finds that the best sunscreenshould be free of parabens, phthalates, PEG’s (polyethylene glycols), propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, SLS/SLES and more. She recommends that the sunscreen should be mostly natural ingredients. The big no-no on her list is oxybenzone.

Beyond the safety issue there are also preferences that should be taken into account. Some moms prefer brands that don’t turn the skin white or apply with a sticky consistency. Finding a fragrance that is appealing and non-irritating is also a secondary consideration.

Do You Know If Your Favorite Restaurant Has Kids LiveWell Options? http://www.momtobedby8.com/do-you-know-if-your-favorite-restaurant-has-kids-livewell-options/ http://www.momtobedby8.com/do-you-know-if-your-favorite-restaurant-has-kids-livewell-options/#comments Mon, 28 Jul 2014 15:32:29 +0000 http://www.momtobedby8.com/?p=39353 {Read More} ]]> Going out to eat is a rare activity for us, but it remains one of my favorites. There’s just something about someone else doing all the cooking and cleaning the dishes that never gets old. The last time you went to your favorite restaurant, did they have a part of the menu for adults that advertised “Healthier Options!” or “Meals under 600 calories!”. Chances are that if you were at a large chain restaurant, they did. What about the kids menu though? Did they have healthy options for your children?

KidsLiveWellCo

The Kids LiveWell initiative is bringing that to American restaurants. (And there’s even an iphone app you can use to find restaurants nearby that meet their criteria.) This has become so popular among restaurants that there are even some fast food chains on the list who have committed to helping our kids have healthier choices. The criteria are reasonable. Here’s an example of what an entree has to meet:

  • 600 calories or less
  • ≤35% of calories from total fat
  • ≤10% of calories from saturated fat
  • <0.5 grams trans fat (artificial trans fat only)
  • ≤35% of calories from total sugars (added and naturally occurring)
  • ≤770 mg of sodium
  • 2 or more food groups

For the many of the on the list, it’s hard to believe that I had never heard of it. I had a chance to sit down with Dr. Joy Dubost, a nutritionist passionate about the program, to get her advice on healthy eating for our kids and to learn a little more about Kids LiveWell.

Where is your favorite place to eat with your children? Are they on the list of LiveWell Restaurants?

Seriously though, as a fan you must know I am a veggie queen. Even though I am by far not a vegetarian, it wouldn’t bother me one bit to not have meet for weeks at a time.

Who here ends up with leftover chicken that you just end up tossing? Me too because let’s face microwaved chicken is almost always dry and unappealing. Since so many of us look back on the moments and regret the wastefulness of tossing it out, I have started pushing myself to find creative and tasty ways to make use of what is in the fridge *including leftovers* and cabinets. Let’s just call it a month of clean out to bring in the new. <~ Yes, do wish me luck because I shall need it.

Let’s get started with that delicious roasted, grilled or even leftover fried chicken from the night before and make a fablous finger food that can be used as an appetizer, after school snack or even the main course for lunch.

    Organized by Budget Earth

    Sponsored by CLR

Do you consider yourself a cleanliness fanatic? In today’s world, women have a lot on their plates. We have to juggle being a mom, professional, wife/girlfriend, daughter, and sometimes even more roles. With everything going on in our lives, we all consider cleaning our homes to be an important job, one which sometimes we have to do during our little bit of down time. While cleaning is important, do you consider yourself a cleaning fanatic? Surprisingly, many Americans consider cleaning to be quite important, and even a central part of their lives!

Recently, CLR had a survey conducted by TNS to learn about American’s cleaning habits and what they considered important about cleaning. Some of what they learned was surprising to me, such as:

    • One-third of Americans have avoided visiting a friend or family member’s home because it is too dirty
    • More than six in ten Americans are triggered to clean their homes when friends, family or significant others visit
    • More than half of Americans consider a dirty bathroom to be one of their biggest pet peeves when visiting other people’s homes
    • One in five Americans only clean their bathrooms once a month

    Jelmar_infographic-01

To say the least, Americans consider cleanliness to be more important than any of us realized! With cleaning being so important to many of us, it isn’t too surprising that we want cleaners that are not only highly effective, but save us time, all without harming our family or the environment. For decades, CLR has been a brand that families have trusted to take care of just about any household job, from getting rid of a nasty calcium buildup with CLR Calcium, Lime and Rust Remover, to getting stains out of our carpets with the CLR Stain Magnet. Once you have tried their products, you won’t want to use anything else!

Would you love the opportunity to try these amazing products for yourself? We are excited to be working with CLR on this awesome giveaway! More about Jamberry Nails

The story of Jamberry Nails begins with three sisters who possess distinct personal tastes, but share a love for style. After an expensive afternoon together at the nail salon, Lyndsey, Christy and Keri vowed to find a simpler, more cost effective way to keep their hands looking polished, while still spending time together.

After lots of trial and error, the proprietary nail wraps of Jamberry Nails launched in late 2010. The DIY, at-home application and incredible variety of designs caught on quickly and sales soared. A new era of nail art was born.

Gone are the days of nails that chip and flake after only a few days! Gone are the days of the single colored manicure. Gone are the mani/pedis that take all afternoon and most of your cash too! Jamberry nail wraps arm you with style and confidence while demanding very little of your time or money.

    Jamberry Art

So what exactly is this craze of prepared nail art wraps that you simply stick on to your nail all about? Are you as skeptical as I was? Well let’s see how our experience went with myself as the nail art technician *note I have no training and do not claim to be an expert at all* and my assistant and beautiful daughter, Aryka.

First off I highly suggest opting for the nail kit and heater offered by Jamberry. Of course you can do without them as I did, but I found afterwards after ordering the extra pieces that I had a better success rate with the length of time the nails stayed on.

For the novice and those who just want to buy the wraps, here is the method we went with.

    Jamberry Collage

    1. Supplies: Hairdryer, Jamberry Nail Wraps, scissors, nail file and nail clippers.

    2. Cut the wraps to fit your nails.

    3. Heat the wrap before placing for smoother application.

    4. Place, mold and cut off extra wrap.

    5. Enjoy!

    Jamberry Nail Success

The put on process was fairly simple and less time consuming than a three coat dry and polish. They looked fantastic as you can see above. In fact we were very happy with them until she started helping me with doing dishes and two came off. I am guessing the hot water disengaged the glue.

Never fear though, we did the process again a few days later using the kit and heater and experience a longer life span and no issues with showering {no dishes those nights}. That is why I highly suggest the heater at least because it seems to work better at activating the sticky backing and creates a better hold than a hair dryer.

In the end, I was happy with the results. $15 is a small price to pay for a creative nail art look. Plus you get at least two applications with each sheet making it about $7.50 per mani. In all honestly I have been getting gelz at the salon for sometime now and my expense is $25 every two weeks and they don’t look nearly as neat.

    Aryka Jamberry Photoshoot

I also think Jamberry Nail wraps a great solution for young girls who don’t like to sit still long enough for the polish to dry. I am sure many of you are reading this going exactly what I was thinking. I cannot tell you how many times I wasted the $20 getting my daughters’ nails done at the salon when I go for them to ruin them before we even walk out the door. So this is me deciding that Jamberry is less costly and a better solution to my daughters’ desire to be beautiful along side of mom.

Do you have a Jamberry Nails experience to share with us?
