Experience A Day at the Beach

Spending a day at the beach is one of my favorite summer time activities. Whether we are visiting an ocean side resort or hanging out by a lake, there is always something for everyone in the family to do! I have nothing but fond memories of the times we spent the day soaking up the sun and splashing around in the water.

Sit Back and Relax

I love spending time stretched out on a beach towel letting my pale skin soak up a little color. I enjoy watching the waves crash on the sand, the boats in the distance pass by in the distance, and the birds fly around looking for food. Not too mention, people watching through my sunglasses (you know you’re guilty, too)! The sand is usually really soft and comfortable and I like to dig my toes into the cool sand underneath the surface. It’s really easy to lose track of time (especially when reading a good book) so make sure you set a timer and wear plenty of sunscreen to avoid being sunburnt! If you’re really spending the whole day at the beach, make sure you take time to view a sunrise or sunset.

Explore and Learn New Things

When I am too restless to sit anymore, I love to explore all that the beach has to offer. This is one of my favorite summer getaways that are Claritin free. There is so much to learn and check out at the beach! It is cliché to say but it’s true for most beach goers; I love to take long walks on the beach, especially, barefoot. Collecting seashells is ok, but we like to see how many varieties of seashells and critters we can spot instead. Play beach bingo: Yes, I said it. Play beach bingo. When the kids grow tired of digging in the sand, have them search the local ecosystem for different varieties of seashells, critters, and animals. It’s an excellent learning opportunity for them to really notice the details of the world around them besides just water and sand.

Play Games and Sports

My family really enjoys playing games on the beach. It’s nice when the local beach already has a swing set or volley ball net. If not, then we bring Frisbees and balls to play catch with, or a kite to fly. Sometimes, the beach is too crowded for running around and so we try to come up with games in the sand for the kids, like, bury Dad or play Tic Tac Toe in the sand. Taking a hike out to the lighthouse can be lots of fun and quite interesting.

Get in the Water

This seems like a no brainer, but I’m always surprised by the number of people I see at the beach that never actually get into the water to swim and play. It’s really nice in there people! If you’re worried about stepping on things, which is a valid concern to have, then stop by the store and pick up some water shoes. Jump waves or play Marco Polo. Get a big tube and laugh at yourself trying to get on and off of it gracefully. Yes, there’s always someone people watching, but no one really cares about what you look like in a swimming suit. Let go and have fun!

i was just reminded of my teenage beach days today when i saw an airplane flying an ad banner, i used to see those all the time at the jersey beaches

  2. Good idea. A day at the beach is a great way to have fun with the family and also some time alone with a book. I never walk barefoot outside because I don’t want to step on something I don’t see and get a bite or cut. I like that you mention sunscreen as a sunburn can ruin a wonderful day really fast. Enjoy the time with your children as they grow up quickly and it is great to have the memories that remain of these good times.

I just went to Erie Beach yesterday. The kids had a lot of fun.

I love going to the beach, I haven’t been in a few years but I’m finally getting to go in August, I can’t wait to sit out on the beach and relax. It’s my daughter’s first time ever going and she’s 2 and she’s so excited!

  6. Beth Dunlavy Hoppe says:

Love your ideas !! I live only a few miles from the beach and take my kids all the time. I’ve even done the ABCs in the sand to teach them.

  7. Gina H. says:

I love the beach! So many fun memories of collecting shells & running from the waves when I was a kid!

  8. Mary Ann Knox says:

I try and do all of those things when we go to the beach. My daughter has finally learned to love getting into the water at the beach so we spend most of out time in the water. Of course playing in the sand takes up the other part of our time! :-)

Thats the 1 thing we don’t have in WI (at least close enough to us!) is a clean, decent beach to take my grand kids to! rs ago, we had a decent place i’d bring my kids to, but it was still almost 1 1/2 hrs N of us, so between the cost of gas & extra’s just needed for 5 kids, even beach day was an expensive trip.
The 1 thing I liked is they had a shack at the beach where you could check out sand/water toys for the kids. That was nice if you’d forget your own or not enough. The also had low cost water/juice/snacks, & a great pizza/ice cream joint just a short walk into town.
Would just love for a clean/sandy beach close enough to bring m grand kids (sigh) looks fun!

  10. I live about 10 minutes from the beach and can honestly say…. the beach is fun, but we have only gone twice in the past 5 years. ;(

A day at the beach has been my favorite thing to do with my daughter so far! She loves the sand and the water, and I love just watching her be a kid, in her natural state, with no technology in sight.

  12. You are so lucky to live close to a beach! We took our kids on vacation to Myrtle Beach and they really enjoyed playing out in the water — although yep — one (the big one Daddy) got a terrible sunburn. They had lot of fun and I’m sure they have memories of their own about it too!

  13. Kristina L says:

I miss the Beach! Where I live there are not beaches only muddy red lakes.. We still will go (I refuse to swim in the lakes) but we go and hunt rose rocks and look for fossil rocks! I would love for my kids to experience the beach!

  14. Jennifer Boehme says:

I wish I lived closer to a beach. It is a peaceful and a relaxing feeling. And going as a kid, I still remember those times, fun, fun!

  15. Deborah D says:

I never realized how educational the beach can be.

  16. I’m sure with Labor Day Weekend coming up … there will be many who head to “Experience A Day at the Beach.” It is great fun for all ages.

  17. Amber Dempsey says:

Such a great post and it reminded me of how fun the beach can be. My husband and I have been trying to find fun/free things to do for the summer. Some how we have not gone to the beach yet! This is making me want to change that!

  18. Deborah D says:

Sounds like fun. I wish I lived closer to the beach.

  19. Cynthia Brooks says:

I live in california and I used to walk on the beach a lot growing up. I’m still here in California and I rarely take the kids to a whole beach fun day. If we do go its usually walking. I need to pick a sunny day and just do it.

  20. I have so many special beach family memories from my childhood! We used to go into the ocean to swim but now we mostly just relax and enjoy the scenery and sunshine ☼

  21. cylina williams says:

I wish there was a beach close to me, we love the beach and try to get to one often. Always good memories to be had and made!

  22. There’s a beach 2 miles from me but the water is not like the Caribbean water where you can see to the bottom. The one by me is scary because of the Sharks (12 ft shark caught in the surf-Padre Island) and Man O Wars you can’t see. All it takes is some seaweed to brush up against my leg..I scream.

  23. Deborah D says:

The kids look like they had fun!!!

  24. Darlene Jones-Nelson says:

A day at the beach is a great way to save money and have a great time! When we go we look in the sand for shells and other crawling things! We also got on the trails and look at the natural surroundings.

  25. Its beginning to get cold here in CT and a beach day memory is fading fast. It is true about how many pleasures and fun are to be had by and in the water. I’ll start looking forward to next year.

  26. We love the beach great family vacation :)

  27. bev thomass says:
