5 Most Common Cleaning Blunders

Cleaning a home is a hefty job and by making the right decisions a home owner may lessen the stress involved in keeping everything in good shape. There are a lot of easy decisions that can be made to ensure a home owner has the cleanest house, and spends the least amount of time performing those necessary household jobs. The following tips should make cleaning much less of a hassle and safer for any home owner who has a dirty home.

1. Use the wrong equipment or use dirty cloths

Certain cleaning agents were meant for specific surfaces just as some machines were designed for particular jobs. Cleaning will go much easier if a person has an abundance of tools for the job. In addition, using the same cloth everywhere can make cleaning more difficult due to leftover dirt and the creation of streaks on various surfaces.

2. Do all the cleaning in one day

Whether someone lives in an apartment or a house, doing everything related to the cleaning of the home in one day doesn’t make sense. Setting up a few tasks to take care of each week will allow a home owner to cycle through all the necessary projects without getting burned out on cleaning.

3. Clean without organization

Vacuuming every week keeps carpets looking fresh and new, but organizing the house is required as well to cut down on things like dust, mites, and fleas. Most people stick with a few types of cleaning that they don’t mind performing too much, and then they fail to realize an old stack of newspapers has a ton of dust in it and is contaminating the area.

4. Fill the home with chemicals

The back of any type of bottle of household cleaner may contain dozens of harmful chemicals, but it’s not necessary to use cleaning options that might harm the family or even the family pets. When choosing new cleaning products, it’s vital to consider green and natural options. This also includes any work done by outside companies. 5. Waste cleaning products and energy

    One thing I hate, too, is the use of dirty sponges…or when my boyfriend uses the sponge that I wash dishes with…to clean the counters or a spot on the FLOOR!!! It totally freaks me out!

  2. Good post. I know I’m guilty of a couple of those. I have switched to using more natural products because some of the cleaners used to give me headaches and/or make me nauseous and that can’t be good. I could really stand to organize my cleaning routine better though.

  4. I get too overwhelmed and shut down if I have to clean everything in one day. It’s always better for my mental state if I clean over a couple of days. I will pick up the bedroom and clean the bathroom, then I’m done. Next day the kitchen and the next day dust and vacuum the living and diningrooms. Mostly for me it’s getting the crap off of the kitchen table which no matter how much I groan and moan about it always becomes a drop zone.

  5. Cleaning with lots of chemicals is a dangerous game but, in my house, can affect my husband greatly. He can’t breathe. Definitely a no-no!

  6. I try to pick a chore a day. Mondays the kitchen gets cleaned and mopped…I’m very chemical sensitive so I really have to be careful.

    I’m guilty of using paper towels. I can not stand the thought of germs and if I can avoid moving them from one spot to another it makes me feel better.

  11. I’m a chore-a-day cleaner. I get overwhelmed if I try to do too much at once. Baking soda and Vinegar with essential oils is great for most cleaning.

    Your right in saying that our homes are full of poisons. Looking at what’s in the chemicals we use is mind boggling. I’m trying to go green and use more friendly products.

  13. I USE ONE CLEANER ON EVERTHING –THAT IS SIMPLE GREEN–LITTLE ELBOW GREASE AND SIMPLE GREEN CLEANS A LOT.

  15. Oh I definitely agree with all of these! Cleaning really does require organization and planning, but it’s also important to make sure all the bases are covered. And all those toxic chemicals? Seems like the opposite of cleaning if the whole family ends up breathing in fumes and being exposed to irritants that may remain as residue and potentially transfer everywhere. Cleaning in one day sounds like a lofty goal, but it probably means a half-hearted job when fatigue settles in. It’s probably beneficial to have a variety of towels and old clothes so that the right material is used to do the job.

  19. yeah I totally agree that one of the most common cleaning blunders is do the cleaning all day. Its better to set up few tasks and slowly cleaning them each day so it will not be too much hassle to do all the household chores in one day.

  20. I try to do a bit every day. we have a large home (4 washrooms) and 5 children, so most days I feel like every time i clean anything, they destroy 3 other things. its never ending lol

    Hmm, yep, definitely guilty of some of those… mostly cleaning without organization and doing all the cleaning in one day. I know it would be a lot easier if I didn’t just do that, but I never can seem to kick myself out of those habits! Oh my.

    Unfortunately, I am not able to give up my sponges, but what I do do is put them in the dishwasher. And I always finish cleaning the counters in my kitchen with a home-made Tea Tree Oil cleaner.

    I have a thing about dirty sponges, I replace them every two days. What I do to not go broke buying sponges is buying really large ones on sale/discount and cut them to my needs. I agree with your tip of not trying to do everything at once – organize your time effort and energy and the job will be easier.

    You sure sound like my 84 year old mother I live with she has a set routine in cleaning and I of course help her and do a lot of it but she wants it clean . She will says don’t use that on this jou just cleaned etc. with that I now know how she likes it done and our house stays in tip top shape and everyone that comes by wants to know how it always looks so clean and neat it is like you say in your story more people should follow because it works and is easier

    Great post at a great time…I will admit, in the past 48 hours, I have committed almost every one of these. Our apartment was flooded, and we just got back in 2 days ago (after not being able to live in it for 9 days). I’ve been in hyper cleaning mode since. .

    I try to clean over several days, but it seems like once I’m done with one room and on to the next, the other room is dirty again. With a little guy around, I try to clean as much as possible – so I’m definitely guilty of “Do all the cleaning in one day”. Nonetheless, great tips!

    I try to break it down between Saturdays and early Sunday morning that way I can enjoy a laid back Sunday afternoon and evening (and I always use the crock pot on Sundays so I don’t mess the kitchen back up and have a great meal by suppertime)

    We all want to stretch all cloths and towels, using them for way more than we should before getting a clean one. This just spreads the dirt and germs we already cleaned up. I like to come up with a cleaning plan in my head for what I’m going to clean and in what order. Plus, I try to clean as I go with cooking and picking up so their isn’t that much to do at one time.
